Marble Paintings

A Perfectionist's Take on Abstract Art

As an artist and creative, I tend to be very detail-oriented and meticulous. Bordering on OCD to be honest. Creative ability is inextricably linked to a person's psychology and I am no different; my own insecurity certainly plays into my artwork. I have a lot of trouble knowing when an illustration is done - there are always little adjustments that need to be made for it to be 'right'.

I discovered marble art tutorials on Pinterest and it has been such a fun experience creating my own pieces. What I love most about creating these marbles is having a lack of control over the end result. Once you apply the paint, there isn't a huge amount you can do to change how things turn out. Sure, there's some technique to how the paint is applied, but generally the most control I have is over mixing the colors. This lack of creative control is scary until your painting dries and you realize you created something beautiful, complex, one-of-a-kind. What a fun experience for an artist who tends to plan everything out to the tiniest detail.

To speak to technique, all of these paintings were created with acrylic paint on canvas. Essentially I mix a good amount of paint in a variety of colors. Then all colors are mixed with personal lubricant (my Amazon suggestions are now ruined) to allow it to slide around on the canvas. Once the colors are mixed, I pour each color directly on the canvas. Can't say I have a lot of technique to the pour - I just dump it on there. Most all of the time I'll pick up the canvas and tilt it around to get that pretty curvy shaping you see in most of these pieces. Given how much paint is used, these pieces usually take a few days to completely dry out. It's worth the wait!

As a designer and illustrator, I'm always looking for new ways to create magic for others. Whether you're looking for a rebrand, a new website, or even a new long-term designer, let's make the connection.
